The 35th NABJ Convention in San Diego, CA will be upon us this week. We are encouraging the members of the BJASC to be a part of the comradely, professional development, and festivities that make NABJ conventions special.

Furthermore, we are encouraging all BJASC members to support our local journalist and publishers by attending their sessions.



Meeting Notes – July 17, 2010

Meeting was called to order by Beverly.

Brief discussion on the successful efforts of Lois to obtain scholarship funding and recent activities with Sharon to contact other corporations.

The chapter agreed to organize an event to raise funds. Beverly indicated that instead of the traditional dinner, this would be more of a reception or party that could possibly feature a celebrity or activity that would draw a crowd.



The Future of Journalism Workshop Recap

On Saturday April 24th, The BJASC held its second in a series of occasional seminars for college students titled “The Future of Journalism” at USC’s Waite Phillips Hall. New Media maestros from the blogosphere and award-winning veterans from the mainstream shared their expertise in lively discussions with students and instructors from several local universities. Please join BJASC President Beverly White, board executives and members Saturday May 1st as we roll south for the monthly meeting of the San Diego Association of Black Journalists.

SDABJ leaders attended our meeting in March. We intend to return the favor, departing at 9am for the meeting at noon.

Robin D. Stone Book signing in Los Angeles a Success!

An intimate crowd of BJASC members and friends shared a warm and informative evening Wednesday April 7th with New York journalist and author Robin D. Stone.

Stone was in LA to promote her late husband Gerald Boyd’s memoir “My Times in Black and White – Race and Power and The New York Times”.



The Future of Journalism Workshop for College Students

Does Journalism Have a Future?
Our field has changed drastically over the last two decades, where is it going and how can you saddle up for the bumpy ride? A Workshop for College Students on April 24 , 2010 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.. Come learn about the fundamentals of storytelling, advances in New Media and career coaching.

Participants include Bill Whitaker (CBS News), Beverly White (NBC4), Harry Gore (The Washington Post), Natalie Cole (OurWeekly), Billy Johnson, Jr. (Yahoo) and other industry professionals.

BJASC Awards Students Scholarships in 2009

BJASC continued its tradition of supporting promising journalists by awarding scholarships to four college students at its annual reception.

The event marked a milestone for the organization – over the past 29 years, it has awarded $100,000 in scholarships to college students.



Beverly White Elected as next BJASC President

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (BJASC) – Members of the Black Journalists Association of Southern California elected Beverly White as the chapter’s next President. White is veteran general assignment reporter for the “Channel 4 News.” White joined NBC4 in 1992 from WTVJ, the NBC owned and operated station in Miami.

White specializes in live television and has covered a variety of stories for NBC4 including the destructive El Nino weather system, the recurrent Southern California wildfires, local flooding, mudslides and the Northridge earthquake. In addition, she has traveled for NBC4 on select stories such as the 2004 hurricane swarm in Florida and Alabama.



BJASC Member and Veteran Broadcaster Pat Harvey Celebrates 20 Years in the Industry

STUDIO CITY, Calif. (CBS) — NewsCentral’s Pat Harvey is celebrating 20 wonderful years with KCAL 9 Friday, and the Los Angeles City Council is recognizing her anniversary and achievements by proclaiming Friday as Pat Harvey Day. Harvey, an award-winning and nationally recognized broadcast journalist, joined KCAL in 1989, and has anchored Prime 9 News since it was launched a few months later. She is the longest-running anchor in prime time at one station in Los Angeles and the only African-American female. In addition to her anchoring duties, Harvey regularly reports on issues of concern to Southern California and the world. In 2009, Pat attended the inauguration of President Barack Obama and filed live reports for the CBS duopoly from Washington D.C. In 2008, she conducted an exclusive interview with the Cobles, a couple who lost their three children in an horrific truck crash in Orange County. The interview and subsequent investigations into the trucking industry, lead to calls for safety regulations.
