Reforming Education in Post-Katrina Louisiana
One of the legacies of Hurricane Katrina is the nearly total transformation of New Orleans’ beleaguered public education system. Voucher programs are expanding, with the most recent state school reform legislation enabling more students across Louisiana to attend private schools at taxpayer expense. Opponents contend that under this system, there’s an absence of widespread access to special needs education, less accountability for individual institutions and a greater likelihood that children of less-involved parents may fall through the cracks. A panel of experts engages a discussion of the controversial topic with local residents.
