MEMBERSHIP TYPES AND ELIGIBILITY
- Full Membership
(Voting) – $50 annual dues
Full-time journalists who are reporters, news editors, photojournalists and newsroom managers employed by print, broadcast or Internet entities that produce, gather, disseminate and distribute the news; full-time freelance journalists who work regularly for print, broadcast and Internet news groups. - Associate Membership
(Nonvoting) – $30 annual dues
Individuals who are former, part-time or part-time freelance journalists, journalism instructors and lecturers, agency and corporate public-relations professionals, public-information officers working for a government entity, advertising professionals and others who work for a media-related organization. (An application for associate membership is subject to approval by the membership committee and board of directors.) - Student Membership
(Nonvoting) – $15 annual dues
Individuals who are full-time students studying journalism at an accredited college or university.
BJASC COMMITTEES
Membership/Web
The Membership Committee works to recruit, retain and reclaim BJASC members. It handles all matters relating to paying dues, updating membership status, maintaining membership rolls and any other general membership information. It also conducts a yearly membership drive and focuses on membership networking activities. It also maintains and updates the BJASC website with pertinent membership and media industry information.
Scholarship/Fundraising
The Scholarship/Fundraising Committee plans and coordinates our annual scholarship competition, as well as the awards reception honoring the winners. It promotes and encourages young journalistic talent through scholarship grants and awards to college students. The committee is responsible for organizing and maintaining a scholarship program and awarding scholarships to students pursuing degrees in journalism and related fields. Committee members also develop other fundraising means for the organization, and is the main committee responsible for the BJASC anniversary gala.
Speakers Bureau
The Speakers Bureau is a key BJASC committee. It researches, identifies, and schedules the local newsmakers and panelists on current events who come to address the membership at the general monthly meeting.
College Journalism Workshop
The College Journalism Workshop Committee develops and plans a journalism training seminar for local, aspiring journalists of color who are college students. It supervises all logistics involved including advertising, identifying students, sponsorship and professional workshop participants, as well as devising the day-long program.
Professional Development
The Professional Development Committee promotes and enhances the professional growth of AABJ members and promotes and encourages journalistic talent among high school and college students through discussions, training, education, workshops, seminars, fellowships and other media activities.
Public Forums/Social Action
The Public Forums/Social Action Committee develops and organizes various public forums and roundtables on social issues impacting the local community. It identifies a topic of major social concern, and the panelists/speakers.
